We all know how hard it is at the end of a long day at work, everyone has that moment when all we want to do is get straight home and curl up in front of the TV. Even though you fully intend and have planned to get in the gym after you left the office, it sometimes just isn’t meant to be. We’ve been doing some thinking and have come up with 6 of our top tips to getting motivated to get to the gym after work even when you feel down.

1 – Make Sure You Eat Breakfast

You may be wondering why eating breakfast is a huge motivational factor in going to the gym after work but setting yourself up for workout success starts within an hour of waking up. Even though it’s several hours before your session, having a smart breakfast will keep your body from depleting its stored glycogen, which you need to stay energised throughout the rest of the day.

2 – Pack a Pre Workout Snack

If making it to the gym four hours after eating lunch is tough for you, make sure you bring a pre-exercise snack to eat about 45 minutes before you leave the office and make the trip to the gym. Since snacks are smaller than meals, this is just the right amount of time for your body to digest most of this snack and use it as energy during your workout.

3 – Get Ready for the Gym at Work

You should try out switching your clothes before you leave work. With this you’re giving yourself a visual reminder that you’re committed to working out.

4 – Hit The Gym With a Buddy

Instead of making plans to meet up with an old friend over cocktails, schedule in a gym session and workout together. The fact that you’re meeting a friend there will make you less likely to miss the desired session.

5 – Make Treats a Motivational Factor

Make a deal with yourself, if you look forward to a glass of wine at the end of your day, turn that little treat into a reward for your workout, in other words, no workout no wine.

6 – A Little Session is better than no Session

Telling yourself you have to go for a full 2 hour gruelling workout is probably not ideal. If you tell yourself that you have to go to the gym for at least 15 minutes, you’re more likely to go. Make your session a realistic target and do not scare yourself out of it.
